IDEC Context

Article 29 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child provided the context for the initiation of IDEC-Ireland work.  In particular, under article 29(d), State Parties agree that the education of the child will be directed to:The preparation of the child for responsible life in a free society, in the spirit of understanding, peace, tolerance, equality of sexes, and friendship among all peoples, ethnic, national and religious groups and persons of indigenous origin.

Intercultural and Diversity Education …

Involves lifelong education  that recognises, celebrates and respects the normality of diversities in all parts of human life.

Enables learners (throughout their life cycle) to appreciate that human beings have naturally developed a range of different ways of life, customs and world views and that this view of human life enriches all of us

Promotes equality and human rights

Challenges unfair discrimination

Promotes the values upon which equality is built

Reflects society and influences the shaping of its diversity.
